Marathon World Championships, the new Super Bowl of running comes to Athens in 2030.

What we know

The World Marathon Championships is planning on launching its own standalone event away from the traditional World Atghletics event beginning in 20230 with the event taking place in the original marathon birthplace, Athens, Greece. The marathon will remain part of the World Athletic Championships in 2027 and 2029 but will move to Athens for the inagural event with men and women competing in alternate years.

Athens, back to our roots. World Athletics and the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS) will help from the Region of Attica, also have agreed to a partnership to elevate the Athens Marathon The Authentic to the highest tier if global road racing. The race has been awarded Elite Label status, recognizing its place in history and its potential within the international calendar.

The partnership is also marking the beginning of a multi-year investment program designed to modernize rge original Olympic course while still preserving its 2500 year heritage.

The Super bowl of Running, a global celebration. With the popularity of running growing by the day, I believe its a move in the right direction to honor the sport and give our athletes a proper recognition as the new World Championships makes its way around the world at various cities, allowing the whole world to honor the discipline of marathon running and continuet. o grow our sport and invite all to challenge themselves in this distance.
