A Million Dreams (and a Few Broken Hearts): The Odds of Getting Into the 2026 London Marathon

An astonishing — and frankly outrageous — 1,133,813 people from the UK and across the globe have officially entered the public ballot for the 2026 TCS London Marathon, set to take place on Sunday, April 26 next year.

London Marathon

To put it in perspective: that’s more people than live in San Francisco, all hoping to toe the line on race day in London. It’s the running world’s version of Willy Wonka’s golden ticket — minus the chocolate, plus 26.2 miles of pain and glory.

Lets Talk Odds

While exact figures can shift, it’s estimated that around 17,000 spots are up for grabs in the public ballot. That puts your odds at roughly 1 in 67 — or 1.5%. For perspective, you have a better chance of being struck by lightning while doing strides than hearing “Congratulations, you’re in!”

So, What If You Don’t Get In?

Don’t toss your race kit in the bin just yet. There are still ways to secure your place on that famous London start line:

Charity Places – Fundraise for an incredible cause and lock in your bib. Bonus: the crowd support hits different when your shirt says “Saving Kittens Since 2019.

Tour Operators – Especially useful for international runners. Be warned: these packages often cost more than your monthly rent

Good For Age / Championship Entry – If you're fast enough, this route skips the ballot altogether. Just need to be… like, really fast

Running Club Ballots – Join a UK-affiliated club, run some cross-country, drink post-race tea, and cross your fingers

What Makes London So Special?

Part of the race's allure is its inclusive spirit. Despite the challenging odds, the ballot is free to enter, meaning there’s no financial risk — just a chance at glory. And that democratic structure, combined with the race’s rich history, top-tier organization, and energetic support, makes the London Marathon feel like a global festival of running

Final Thoughts

If you’re reading this with one eye on your training plan and the other on your inbox, we see you. The truth is, London may be a long shot — but every year, thousands of everyday runners get that magical email and go from the hopeful to London Marathon Finisher legends

Until then: keep training, keep hoping — and maybe start brushing up on your fundraising skills, just in case

London Marathon Ballot results will be emailed in July 2025, best of luck!
